The Black String Triage Ensemble, an all-African American string orchestra in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, performs on the scene in the immediate aftermath of incidents of gun violence, altering the notion of “first responders.” In a city with such a troubled relationship with violence, can this ensemble transform the traumatized public space into a place of recovery, healing and hope.
A non-narrative short film tracking the movement of a flock of women through a megalithic landscape. They appear to be working, enacting a cryptic ceremony with a sense of calm & purposeful labor. A score weaving together their breath & hums with sounds collected from the landscape: wind, Rattlesnake grass & their hands rubbing against stone. The women's gestures come from both work & dance – evoking the strange overlap between labor & ritual. This film began as a response to the physicality of daily life as a mother & the rhythm of these acts; the relentless repetition of parenting, working, tending the world with our bodies. This repetition can easily become vacant labor, but it can also transform into a kind of meditative, even transcendent ritual, a collective communion with the landscape & each other. ALMA offers itself as a companion piece to McKenna’s photographic rubbings, a glimpse into the same world from where her art arises.
An elementary school teacher, Sun-mi is a patient with congenital absence of the vagina, which means she has no vagina and womb. Since childhood, she has been hiding her disease and living inside a bubble to protect herself from society. This is essentially a highly condensed remake of the famous 1982 Isao Takahara release. It tells the story of Gauche, a struggling cellist in a provincial orchestra. He is visited by four talking animals - a cat, a cuckoo, a tanuki, and a field mouse - on successive nights They help him to improve his playing, just in time for orchestra’s concert performance of Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony.
Faust - a lonely scholar, despairing of life, who has so far failed to discover its highest meaning - is given a book on black magic from three mysterious students from Cracow. When Mephistopheles appears and proposes a pact with Faust, the two of them set off together on a (dream) journey. Doktor Faust remained a fragment at the time of the composer's death. Busoni died in 1924, unable to complete what he himself described as his "state masterpiece" - an opera to which he had a deep personal attachment. The missing scenes from the score were completed by his pupil, Philipp Jarnach, whom Busoni had become acquainted with during his period in exile in Zurich. In this form the opera was given its first performance in Dresden in 1925. Then in the 1980s the conductor Anthony Beaumont came across previously undiscovered sketches by Busoni and produced a new version of Doktor Faust. The current recording uses the Jarnach score.
