From the music of Japanese composer Shigeru Umebayashi, Romanian filmmaker Radu Jude crafts a coda to Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World. This short film is part of the 2x25 Project of Film Fest Gent and the World Soundtrack Awards. The project commissioned 25 composers to compose a short piece of music, after which 25 filmmakers made short films that are the ultimate symbioses of music and cinematography, fitting completely within the DNA of the festival. Set in a small town suburb, a pathological lying teen, Max, tries to win over his crush Lindsey by inviting her to a concert that has yet to exist. After his band band mates suddenly quit and Max realizes his inability to write music, he is left with deceptively recruiting his broken hearted friend, Greg, to write for him. But when Greg tries to to get back with his girlfriend and realizes what Max has done to him, they must put aside their differences in order to push their music careers and relationships forward.
On Friday July 29, 2016, singer/songwriter and pianist Regina Spektor performed at WTTW's Grainger Studio in Chicago to about 400 of her biggest fans. Spektor delivers an array of her compositions from past projects and her (then) latest album 'Remember us to life'.
Directed by Mexican choreographer-director Camila Arroyo, and created in collaboration with designer Sabrina Olivera, “Soldaderas” is a contemporary interpretation of the figure of the Soldadera, known as the women fighters of the Mexican revolution. The choreographic portrait follows a young woman as she dances her way through Mexico City, capturing her twists and turns as well as the different self-fashioning rituals that accompany her. The film is also a moving archive of Olivera’s first collection, created in honor of the Soldaderas, for her upcoming brand Sabrina Ol. The movement in the film plays with the idea of the word soldar, translated in English as to weld. Centering this action, the choreographic language plays with the actions of melting, and rebuilding, braiding and forging as a backbone to how the protagonist moves around the city. As we watch the film, we play dress up with the dancer and sink into our bodies, allowing her movements to travel through us.
Screenwriter John Good's rock & roll adaptation of Shakespeare's Othello who is a wandering evangelist who happens onto Iago's remote commune. There he marries the lovely Desdemona much to the chagrin of Iago, who also loves her. The conniving commune leader then manages to quietly pressure Othello until murder and tragedy ensue. Songs include: "Othello", "Working on a Building," "Eat the Bread, Drink the Wine," "Book of Prophecy," "That's What God Said," "Chug a Lug," "Open Your Eyes," "Lust of the Blood," "Put Out the Light" and more.
This performance by Gilberto Gil was recorded live at Estúdio Frame in São Paulo on January 18, 1994, as part of the MTV Unplugged series. It was originally broadcast on MTV later that year and released in 1994 on CD, LP and cassette. In 2001, the concert was also issued on home video DVD. The set featured songs such as "A novidade", "Drão", "Expresso 2222", "Aquele abraço", "Palco" and "Tempo Rei". Gil (vocals and acoustic guitar) was accompanied by Arthur Maia (acoustic bass guitar and double bass), Jorginho Gomes (drums and mandolin), Celso Fonseca (acoustic guitar), Marcos Suzano (percussion) and Lucas Santtana (flute).
The owner of an inn instructs one of his employees to find an interpreter, but the man returns with Farhat, a naïve country bumpkin who only causes confusion among the hotel's guests. Dr. Helmy, who is staying at the hotel, asks Farhat to impersonate him in order to test the feelings of his fiancée, Nona. Posing as Dr. Helmy, Farhat travels to Alexandria, where the young woman lives.
