In The Room, Franco-Egyptian visual artist Youssef Nabil delivers a poetic, meditative short film that plays like a vintage piece of Golden Age Egyptian celluloid. Melding moving image with his signature hand-colored, highly theatrical aesthetic, Nabil crafts a comforting fable about mortality and transition. The film follows Nabil as a soul contemplating the end of his earthly existence. He is met at the threshold by performance art icon Marina Abramović, who embodies a serene, angelic guide. Rather than leading him into darkness, Abramović awakens him from the "dream" of life and ushers him through a symbolic doorway into a radiant, hyper-saturated paradise. Materializing as a traditional Farah (an Arabic wedding celebration meaning "Joy"), this afterlife becomes a festive, music-filled homecoming—framing the end of life not as a tragedy, but as a beautiful transition into eternal celebration.
Set in a Medieval town, the film has a theatrical quality, as the behaviours and actions of the characters are exaggerated almost to the point of satire. Nevertheless, its relatively dark and heavy plot yields over-the-top expressions from the actors. There is little dialogue as the story opens: a mother is seen tending to her sick daughter, whom she is then told must be sacrificed to the forest. The viewers patiently but curiously watch the mother perform healing rituals with objects like egg shells, dried plants and twigs–also recurring in the installation–until the daughter mysteriously disappears.

Murti (Sally Marcelina), the daughter of bankrupt farmer Murdali (Wenda Wijaya), is offered up as a bride to relieve a family debt owed to loan shark Juragan Hamid (Mawardi Harland). Before the forced marriage occurs, Murti and her boyfriend Yusman (Johan Saimima) run off and marry one another is a mystic ceremony witnessed by the spirit of the dwarf shaman Mbah Jagaraga (El Koesno). After becoming married to the man she hates, Murti learns that Juragan Hamid is a fugitive convict so he kills her to secure his secret. Murti’s death disturbs another spirit and the two of them return as ghosts to haunt the village.
