20 years ago, a large number of "spiritual gates" suddenly appeared around the world. People having contact with the spirit gushing out of these gates would gain miraculous powers, and these people are called "spiritual warriors". Among them, those gaining "spatial powers" have become the synonym of the most powerful spiritual warriors because of their outstanding performance in a "beast invasion" and the small number of them. Jiang Nan grew up in an orphanage in Jiangcheng City of Lingzhou, and has determined to become a top spiritual warrior since childhood. At the age of 16, he gains the rarest and strongest spatial power and becomes the second spatial spiritual warrior. This is where the story begins.

.hack//Liminality is an OVA series directly related to the .hack video game series for the PlayStation 2, with the perspective of Liminality focused on the real world as opposed to the games' MMORPG The World. Liminality was separated into four volumes; each volume was released with its corresponding game. The initial episode is 45 minutes long, while subsequent episodes are 30 minutes long. The video series was directed by Koichi Mashimo, written by Kazunori Itō with music by Yuki Kajiura. Primary Animation production was handled by Mashimo's studio Bee Train which collaborated for the four games as well as handled major production on .hack//Sign.
Nishiyama Satomi (nicknamed "Limit") is the daughter of Professor Nishiyama. One year she was mortally wounded during a plane crash. Her father was able to revive her, by making her a cyborg. As a cyborg she is gifted with “Miracle Powers” and several different accessories that aid her in solving different problems. Her red beret can be used as a radio to contact her father, and her boots have super speed. She is also able to transform with her pendant. Limit-chan also has a robot pet dog named Guu. Limit keeps her cybernetic powers a secret, as she fears being shunned by society. She keeps to herself, and sometimes keeps distance from others. Her secret is only known by her father and his assistants. In the final episode she reveals her secret to her teachers.
